Septic System Inspection

The inspector for the septic system came out today. I didn’t have to be there, but I wanted to be in case he had any feedback. I believe we’ve done everything as professionally as possible, but no way of knowing what I don’t know.

That said, the inspection went really well. Actually, until near the end of the conversation, he thought we had had it professionally installed, and was surprised we did so well with our first one.

The only thing I had to do was pour a bucket of water into the distribution box, so that he could see water went into the two output pipes in roughly equal quantities.

He confirmed that the drain rock under the drain field chambers was unnecessary, but would add life to the system, and he confirmed that we made the right choice to use 4” PVC to connect the tank to the distribution box. He said we had a good system setup, and that the original results from our soil showed that we had good percolation. Hopefully he is right and the system lasts a long time.

He said to email him an ‘as-built’ drawing and he would add that to the records. We do not get a final approval until the tank is hooked up to the house and inspected, but this part was considered done, and we could proceed to backfilling.

Having this system inspected and approved has been a huge relief, and is a major milestone for us. I’ve been self-conscious as to whether we can really do this work ourselves, and what an inspector will say. Having this go so smoothly came as a surprise, and is a confidence boost.
